Assyrians stay strong.
There are times when battles ought to be fought and there are times when fights should be left aside. When you listen to an uneducated, conceited and delusional man trying to stubbornly convince you a pseudo history of our people, there is no point in trying to convince him otherwise. But when you are facing a battle that threatens your national identity, you take that challenge and fight back.
Gabriel Awrohum took that battle when a few men behaved like the Superior Moral Police in Iran and told him that he could not wear the Assyriska jersey. When he refused to take it off, the men attacked him and kept on battering him even after he lost consciousness.
You tell your children that your people have been victims of several genocides, the latest by the Turks during the First World War because of your national or religious identity, but what do you say to your children when you become victimized by your own people because of the flag that you are wearing?
We all know the reason behind the conflict among our people and we know that this will continue to get worse as some of us still allow the treacherous hatred propaganda from different channels to go on tearing us apart. We have seen the results from the hatred before and the abusers have been forgiven, but this time the forgiveness has not been as easy to give as before.
This is not an act of jealousy nor is it related to alcohol or any external factors, this is an act of pure hatred. Hate of the Assyrian flag and hate of the Assyrian people. Gabriel showed us that we do not fall back when we face such hatred, he showed courage and pride as a true Assyrian, wearing the beautiful Assyrian flag no matter which battle he is facing.
Martin Luther King said: “If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream.”
Therefore I urge each and every one of you to wear the Assyrian flag wherever you go and stand for what our hero Gabriel Awrohum did. This will tell them that we stay strong, united and that we do not fear anyone.
